With over twenty years of experience as a researcher, writer, educator and advisor, Brown’s area of expertise is ethical fashion in all its forms from slow design and heritage craft skills to recycling, reuse, alternative business models and ethical practices.

Consultancy

Brown has served as a sustainable design advisor and workshop coordinator for women's cooperatives, artisan enterprises, governmental agencies, NGOs and small and medium-sized enterprises around the world. Clients have included GAP Inc, the UNs Ethical Fashion Initiative’s Designer Accelerator and Sustainia 100, Denmark’s sustainable fashion initiative. She is on the executive board of Global Sustainable Fashion Week, Empowering Women Empowering Nations and London True Luxury Week.

Writing

Sass Brown has published papers in the commercial press as well as in academic journals on the topic of sustainable fashion. Her publications include the books; Eco Fashion and ReFashioned for British publishers Laurence King, published in Italian as well as Spanish and distributed in the US. She contributed to Fashion United’s podcast series with Fashion Bytes, has written monthly articles for the National UAEs Luxury weekend magazine, was International Editor for Coco Eco Magazine, and written for the Guardian, Vogue Japan, Selvedge magazine and Not Just a Label. She operated her own blog called EcoFashionTalk for many years coinciding with the publication of her first book and contributed to many online platforms and publications. She also periodically writes for a variety of academic journals and publications including Mandragora in Italy, and has written content for the MISTRA Future Fashion online platform Textile Toolbox.

Academic Programming

Brown wrote Kingston University London’s MA: Sustainable Fashion Business and Practices, a hybrid fashion business course intended to deliver tangible interventions to fashion’s unsustainable footprint. She has written modules for Politecnico de Milano on design and artisan collaborations, as well as course work for FIT New York’s MA in Fashion Design, and the non-credit programme Design for Social Impact and London College of Fashion’s online executive studies programme. She helped to develop the Dubai Institute for Design and Innovation’s curricular content in collaboration with MIT and Parsons the New School and wrote curricular content for UK high schools as part of the annual STEM challenge entitled Energizing Futures which educates 9 to 14 year old’s on the impacts of mainstream fashion.

Speaking

Brown has spoken at a wide variety of international conferences, universities and public-facing events, including Salone di Mobile, Premier Vision, Museo Cristobel Balenciaga, IASDR, Plate Conference, IXEL Moda Columbia, multiple Eco Fashion weeks around the world including Seattle, Raheligh USA, Budapest and New York, as well as Fashion Revolution’s annual country coordinator event, Dubai’s first World Majlis for Dubai Expo 2020 and Dubai Design Week.
